In the 1870s, a Kansas City speculator built the Lumberman’s Portland Cement Company and brick plant just northeast of Carlyle. But the plants never made money, and soon closed, leaving only the hulking shells of the plants to gradually crumble and be reclaimed by nature. Long abandoned, trail users can see the remains of this building on the east side of the trail just north of Carlyle. It is private property.
