GARNETT — The 15th annual trail celebration dinner hosted by the Friends of the Prairie Spirit Trail will be 6 p.m. March 30 at the Community Building in Garnett’s North Lake Park. Tickets are $7 and are available at the Garnett City Hall, Archer Insurance Agency of Garnett or at the door. March 30 is exactly 15 years to the day after the first stretch of the Prairie Spirit Trail officially opened in 1996 along an abandoned Santa Fe track. The Friends said that since then, there have been many trail improvement projects in Garnett, including the renovation of the Santa Fe Depot, the walking tile project, a train caboose, and a nostalgically-lit pathway complete with benches along the trail. In 1998 the trail was extended from Richmond to Ottawa, where there were also several improvements made in connection with the trail. Two years ago, the trail was extended from Welda to Iola. The trail is now the only trail that is a Kansas state park and is more than 51 miles long.
