We put in at Iola this last Saturday to ride to Garnett and back. I was really surprised that the park where the trail head is located HAS NO BATHROOM. Wow. That short ride to Carlyle can be a long one, but there is some secluded areas along there, if you know what I mean. I am hoping that there may someday be plans to have one there at Iola. So, if you are expecting to use facilities, need to plan ahead and make other arrangements.

The ride was the best ever; dry and no wind to speak of. We stopped and ate at the Coffee Loft in Garnett- nice atmosphere and they were very welcoming and hospitable. Please note that the kitchen is closed from 2:30 PM to 5 PM on Saturdays and I think most days, but I am not sure?

We saw where maintenance had been done to keep the trail open and safe. For the first time in the three years we have rode the trail, a park ranger asked to see our permits while stopped at Colony and he appeared pleasantly surprised that they were the yearly ones. We were pleased to see the presence of the ranger, as well.

Only one unpleasant experience this trip — someone walking their dog south or Garnett where the leash was long and the walker had earbuds and the dog decided to go after my tires or me(?) at the last minute. Close call; no contact but still un-nerving. 55.58 miles. Still working on getting a century day this year. Thanks to all who make this possible to enjoy.

The lack of facilities at the end of a ride is worse.

I think the plan is to use Riverside Park at the other end of town as the main trailhead once they get the first extension done. There is a pool there and there have been some rumblings that they might make showers available to cyclists for a nominal fee. Man that would be great in August weather you are parked in Iola or not.

Thanks for the tip about the Coffee Loft kitchen. I must have just hit it at the right times. I will get the details and include them on the page.

Glad you had a good trip, Dog or no.
